Composition of a Landscape

The format of the original

The format after the printing error

Proportions are always on my mind. There is an exactitude that I am always striving for in composing the elements within the frame and how they relate to the proportions of the frame itself. We were making a print of this landscape, Duality and the printer made an error and the proportions of the print changed— it became a longer rectangle than the original painting. You can particulary notice how the tree is fatter in relation to everything else in the error piece. I find the error piece lacking in it's presence— the original format allows one to be closer to everything as the sky is more above the viewer than in the distance and the foreground rises up in front of you rather than being minimalized.
