Miracle at St Anna

I watched the final part of Spike Lee's Miracle at St Anna last night. This film seemed to pass in and out of the theaters far too quickly, yet I found it to be perhaps Spike Lee's best work. So, even despite the fact that it is long (160 mins) and reviews were not so encouraging, I highly recommend spending an evening with it. Without giving anything away, I can tell you of one aspect of the movie that struck me. The story is one of tragedy, loss and survival— throughout a finely carved stone head is always being carried by someone or held nearby. There are also lots of ladders as props and steps around the village where most of the movie is set. The stone head is from a bridge and it stuck me as significant how these symbols worked so well in the sense that they act as connectors between the various sub plots and the characters.
